TOPIK: Test of Proficiency in Korean
The Korean government demands a certain level of English or Korean from international students because basic English or Korean skills are needed in order to have a comfortable stay in Korea.
Therefore, if international students would like to study in Korea for a regular degree course, it is generally required to submit a TOPIK score (Level 3 or higher) with the admission documents to the college or university and to then reach Level 4 or higher to
graduate (for universities, does not apply to college).
However, students who have obtained the designated English Proficiency level (TOEFL PBT 550, CBT 210, iBT 80, IELTS 5.5, CEFR B2, TEPS 550 or more) and are taking courses all in English are not required to pass Level 4. For more information, please ask your college or university.
For exchange students, government invited students, foreign government supported students, Korean language students, art & physical education applicants, the required test scores may be lower. For more information, please ask your college or university.
The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is aimed at providing direction for the study of the Korean language to foreigners who don't speak Korean as their native language. It is also used as a tool to evaluate Korean language speaking proficiency studying abroad and employment. TOPIK previously administered by the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation, was taken over by the National Institute for International Education in 2011.
The test is held in around 200 test centers in 70 countries including 36 test centers in Korea. The test is held six times a year (in January, March, April, July, October and November) and the yearly test schedule is posted on the TOPIK website at the beginning of every year.
The levels are divided into I and II: beginner level for TOPIK I (Levels 1 and 2), advanced level for TOPIK II (Levels 3, 4, 5 and 6). For more information about the test, please refer to the TOPIK website
